All children, no matter what their needs or known abilities, have a right to literacy experiences. Children withstack of books severe disabilities are legislated the fundamental concept that they are educable. Their limitations are acerbated by our inability to access their capabilities. "No child is too communicatively, cognitively, or motorically impaired to be excluded from literacy related activities." David Koppenhaver ( 1990)

computerWith this in mind, a project was born, a contemporary 20th century project, that brings books to life for students who could not read, could not turn pages, but like any other child they enjoyed stories.

In this section you will be given the opportunity to look at some books created by this project. Depending on the way your computer is set up you will have one of two things happen.

1.  You will get a message saying that your computer wants to download the file.  In this case, answer "OK" and tell the computer where to put the file.  Remember where you put it, you will need to open it in Power Point when you are done downloading it.

or

2.  The computer will automatically open the file in Power Point.  In this case, save the document on your computer.  You will not be able to save it back to the server.

If you do not own the Microsoft's PowerPoint you will need to download the PowerPoint Viewer from the Microsoft site.

Descriptions and Directions

Below are a list of books produced with assistance of PowerPoint, and a variety of teachers. Each book was designed to be entertaining as well as educational. They are divided into categories such as holidays. The descriptions next to each book state the readability level, (grade level), if there is a repetitive line in the story, specific content material, and a brief description of each story. Please note that these stories are in no way meant to replace a reading program or even become a substitute for a reading program. They are merely meant to demonstrate an alternate means of presenting information to children with severe physical and cognitive disabilities. To assist children in become more active in the literacy process you may wish to ask them some questions such as: What do you think may happen next? What’s is that? (while pointing to a picture on the screen) Should we read more? And or, should we read it again? Communication symbols can greatly enhance the reading experience as well. A simple communication board could be constructed by printing the books in slide format. See Microsoft PowerPoint for help with printing the books.

Helpful hint: some of the stories are very large files containing sounds and or digital photographs, therefore it may be better to first download the file before bringing the child to the computer.
